CREATE A BOOK

FOCUSING ON CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES AS UNIQUE INDIVIDUALS

This unit is designed for a special education first grade classroom.  The children will be learning about themselves as well as the other kids in the class.  The lesson will be a collaborative effort.  After the book is created it will be posted to the web.

The students will have to bring in pictures of themselves, three of their favorite things and will be asked a series of questions, inquiring about their likes and dislikes.  After each child has these things, each day of the week the class will take turns discussing their items, until all of the students had a turn.  This will give them each the opportunity to present and to get to know each other better.

Procedures:

Day one:

·       The class will have a discussion about books.

·       Some stories will be read, and then characters, parts of a story and how a book is constructed will be discussed during class.

·       The class will be instructed that they will make a book with each one of them as characters in it.

·       The main idea of the book will be decided upon.

·       Each student will be assigned to bring in a picture of themselves and three of their favorite things the next day during class.

Day two:

·       The class will all show their pictures and the three things they chose.  They will explain why they chose those items.

·       Each student will get to go on line to find web pictures of their favorite things, or something that represents them.  Scroll down for some kid friendly web sites.

·       They will be able to scan the photos of themselves, onto a document in word.  Click here for scanning tips.

·       They will copy and paste the three items they found on line.

·       After they copied all of this onto a page, it will be printed and they will be given time to color and decorate their pages.

Day three:

·       The class will be given a printed handout sheet with questions about who they are and what they are good at. Scroll down to print a copy of the hand out. They can add any other comment they wish, for example, what they wish for and what makes them happy.

·       After the students are finished with the work sheet the class will start the beginning of their story as a group.

·       The instructor can write it out on the blackboard, or have each child write a sentence.

·       The class will be told to go home and think about what they may want the middle and ending of the story to be about.  “What kind of problem should they create? And how do they want to solve it?”

Day four:

·       The teacher will pass around the beginning of the story, typed.  Each child can draw something connected to the story on the page.

·       The entire class will then give their ideas as to what they thought of, for the rest of the story.

·       The rest of the story will be created.

Day five:

·       The entire story will be typed.

·       The students will finish decorating the pages.

·       The book will be constructed.

·       All of the pages in the works will be saved in word.

·       The class will organize this and then save it as a web page.  Here

·       They will post the book to their school web site.

·       Each student will get a copy to take home with them.
