This unit plan is designed to
teach 7th grade students how to choose and use a variety of
print resources, including
non-fiction books and reference materials for
research assignments. This until will introduce them to the
various types of print resources and how to locate them in
the library. It will not, however, teach them how to choose
information within the text for research. That is another
unit.
The unit is designed as library
instruction for a 7th grade class. The
content standards are from the library guidelines provided
by the Ohio Department of Education. In addition, NETS standards are addressed.
This unit is designed to take 6 class sessions.
Scenario:
A 7th grade teacher has asked the librarian to teach the students about
using various print resources for research. This includes
using the library OPAC to search for items. These are tools
that students will need to use throughout their lives. The
librarian designed a WebQuest unit to teach the students the
information and skills they will need to know. In
collaboration with the teacher, the librarian
decided that the students would learn more if they are
required to do something with the information. Therefore, within this lesson
students will be required to make a
simple PowerPoint presentation summarizing the information
they learned about locating and using library materials.
They will also need to present the uses of the
different reference materials and
their evaluations of the various print resources.
