Subject: Writing/Math Topic: Writing/Math Research 5th Grade Objectives: The students will use the writing research process to make the writing activities clear for the intended audience, as evidenced by the capacity to focus on the topic with adequate supporting ideas or examples. Procedures: The students will take a survey to determine favorite foods served in the school cafeteria. The students will place the data in an Excel spreadsheet. The students will then make a bar graph to display this data in a manner that food choices can be compared with each other by popularity among students. The students will write a short summary of their findings using a word processor. The word processor will be Word. Evaluation: Before: The students will have been given examples of surveys and how to conduct a survey. The students will have been given a demonstration on the use of the spreadsheet Excel. During: The teacher will monitor the research procedures and the use of Excel. The students will also write a short summary using Word. The summary will be based on the information gathered during the survey and the use of Excel. After: The students will have printed information on the topic of popular school lunches in the Excel spreadsheet format. The students will have a short summary to turn in along with the Excel spreadsheet. Materials: The students have paper and pencils to make notes on information gathered during their survey. The students will have the use of the school computer lab for the programs of Excel and Word. The students will have printers available to print their finished product.
