Do you remember the Dewey Decimal System (DDC)?  You thought you were done with that when you finished school, didn't you?

That is how books are arranged on the shelves at Pickerington Elementary School.  Don’t worry if you forgot, we have links to a few tutorials for you to do, and some tips for shelving in our library/media center.

bullet

Go to the Thinkquest web site, "Do We" Really Know Dewey?  for a general overview of the Dewey Decimal System and read some interesting facts, also.  This site was set up by 5th and 6th grade students.

bullet

Take a Multimedia Tour of the Dewey Decimal System from the OCLC web site, which has a great animated tour.  To start the tour, click on the link on this page.  On the OCLC page, go to the words that are underlined in orange and click on "take the multimedia tour".

Go through the tutorial on "How do DDC numbers organize a collection?"

Pay special attention to the "Let's Do the DDC" page.

Make sure to test yourself on the "Test Your Knowledge of the DDC" page. (It is only 8 questions and you don't have to do 8 if you don't want to, we won't grade it.)

TIPS FOR SHELVING

bullet

Arrange the books in order on the shelving cart.

bullet

Shelve one section at a time, for example, fiction, easy, 100s, 200s . . .

bullet

Refer to the Dewey Decimal posters to see where the shelves for each section are located (fiction, easy, 100s, 200s . . . )

bullet

Don't stress about leaving books unshelved if you must leave, shelving is like housework, it always need to be done!  And it happens eventually.
