This is the most important task for volunteers.  Students will depend on you to make sure their books are checked out on the correct library card, and checked in so we don't hold their report cards.   (Not to put any pressure on you)

Just follow these steps, and you can't go wrong.  You can roll the teacher computer near the circulation desk to use this web site, so you can see both the web site and the circulation terminal at the same time.  Or you can print this page (and the "Check This In" page).  Be sure to use the Landscape orientation for printing.

We really want you to practice with the bar code reader.  It takes most people a little while to get it working, the angle must be straight on.

The library/media center staff will make a library card for you, or you can try this on one of ours.

1.  Look at the computer terminal on the circulation desk.

2.  The opening screen gives you several choices.

There may be a few more or less depending on what is loaded onto the computer.

  1. Type the number of the Circulation screen, probably 1, then press enter.

  2. Under the circulation screen, you will have two or more choices, but the most important are:  Check-in and Check-out.

  3. Type the number of the Check-out screen and press enter.

  4. You will see a mostly blank screen.  Take the bar-code reader,  hold it over the library card, and pull the trigger.

  5. Your name (or one of ours) should appear on the screen.  All the books (and other things) in our collection have a bar code on them that start with a 3163000 number.  On books it is located on the upper back of the book.  Who knows where on the other materials? Just look for it.  Then take the barcode reader and hold it over the barcode on the material to be checked out, and pull the trigger.

  6. The name of the book, or whatever, and bar code will show on the screen under our name.

Very good, you have just checked a book out.

Now go to the "Check This In" page
