We don't charge fines for overdue books. We could probably solve the district's money woes if we did ask, but heck, they're just kids. We do charge for lost or ruined books, though.
Let us say that there is a student who is sure he returned his books, but "knows" that you didn't check them in. If you want to check the shelf or shelving cart, you may, but most times students simply have forgotten to bring them into the library/media center from their classroom, or the books are sitting by the door at home. You should trust yourself and your ability to check the books in and out.
Here are some things you can say to them.
In certain circumstances, we will grab a book to check out for someone who has been waiting and wanting it. Remember our motto: Make them read. (Okay, I just made that up, but we do want them to read.) Let's keep this mostly to ourselves, though. We don't have a great system for keeping track of items students want, so this is just for students who have read all the books in a series but that one, or they really want a certain book. Most of the time they will be happy with something like the book they wanted originally.
Students can become upset at times about the number of books they have out, or they don't remember they have out, or overdue or lost. Try not to upset them and if it becomes a problem, by all means grab a librarian. Sometimes we know what the books look like and reminding the student of that can make a light bulb come on in their head about where it is.
