Animal Farm Chapters 8-10

Assignment 1: Characterization (30 points)

Using Microsoft Word, you are going to create a profile for one of the main characters in Animal Farm.  The combination of words and images should fill one entire page and should give details about the character’s role and purpose in the novel (see example on back).

Details to include:

§         Name

§         Quotes

§         Important Actions

§         Words to describe personality

§         Role animal played on the farm

§         Friends or enemies on the farm

§         Status by the end of the story (where is s/he?)

Characters to choose from:

Ø      Boxer

Ø      Benjamin

Ø      Squealer

Ø      Snowball

Ø      Napoleon

Ø      Moses

Ø      Mollie

Assignment 2: Theme (20 points)

The theme is often a lesson that the characters learn, or that the reader sees based on what happens to the characters.  In the case of Animal Farm, you can read the novel like a fable, where the animal characters could represent different people in society.  The writer, George Orwell, was making a point about people in power.

Type or neatly write 1 page (double spaced or skip lines) explaining what you see as the theme or lesson of this novel.  In thinking about the theme, consider:

o       the consequences of the animals’ actions

o       how the pigs gain leadership

o       how Napoleon becomes a dictator

o       the last chapter of the novel
